In the United States, maternal health is in a quiet crisis. While physical risks during pregnancy and childbirth remain a priority, one of the most pressing – and often hidden – threats to new mothers is mental health.

According to recent data, one in five women in the U.S. experiences a maternal mental health disorder such as postpartum depression or anxiety. But here’s the staggering part: 85% of those women go untreated. That’s hundreds of thousands of mothers every year suffering in silence, without the help they desperately need.

This Maternal Health Awareness Day, we highlight not just the problem, but a path to progress — a story that shows how healthcare AI is reaching and supporting mothers in need.

A breakthrough moment in care

A large nonprofit health system began using a novel approach to fill this maternal care gap. In partnership with Notable, it implemented a new system to proactively screen postpartum women for signs of depression and other mental health disorders.

This outreach didn’t rely on in-person clinic visits or wait for patients to raise a hand for help. Instead, it used Notable’s AI Platform and AI Agents to reach out directly to patients digitally after they gave birth. These interactions happen at just the right time, when a mother is most vulnerable yet least likely to seek help on her own.

The result? The very first outreach flagged a woman as high-risk. Without delay, the system triggered the necessary operational workflow, ensuring that a care team member followed up and got her the support she needed before her situation became critical.

AI technology with a human impact

At the heart of this approach is Notable’s AI Platform, the digital infrastructure behind the scenes, enabling meaningful patient engagement and data-driven decision-making at scale.

Unlike limited point solutions that solve only isolated problems, or legacy systems reliant on manual processes, the Notable Platform and its AI Agents are built to scale across departments and service lines — from phone calls to faxes, and from the front desk to the back office.

Imagine having thousands of digital coworkers who ensure that every postpartum patient is screened for mental health, reminded to attend follow-up appointments, or connected with a behavioral health specialist when symptoms arise — and all without adding more burden to clinical or IT staff. That’s the level of scale and precision Notable brings to the table.

In short, it's about making sure the right patient gets the right message, at the right time.

This isn’t just a healthcare technology story; it’s a leadership story. As systems across the country face rising demands, workforce shortages, and budget constraints, one thing is clear: the status quo isn’t good enough.

This Maternal Health Awareness Day, the message is simple: We can do better. And now, thanks to agentic AI, we are.
